Toxic Tap Water list of the top 12 states with the most toxic water

Your Toxic Tap Water

Every day, we are unknowingly exposed to hundreds of toxic chemicals from sources all around us, such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, packaged foods, household products, environmental pollution, and tap water.

As we have become more exposed to chemical-laden products and toxic chemicals in food, air, and water, we have experienced, as a collective, an accelerated rate of chronic illnesses. These include cancer, heart disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, chemical sensitivity, autism spectrum disorders, AD(H)D, autoimmune disorders, mental health disorders, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and so on.

Did you know that in the United States, nearly one in four households risks having unsafe tap water to drink, or their local municipal water systems have not been properly monitored for contaminants by federal law?

The alarming truth is that too many Americans are turning on their faucets, not for a glass of water, but for a cocktail of toxic, disease-causing chemicals. Lead, arsenic, MTBE, the “forever chemicals” known as PFAS, and many other substances are often found in drinking water at potentially unsafe levels, particularly in low-income and underserved communities.

At least 27 million people, or one in every 12 Americans, are exposed to drinking water systems with major health-based violations. These violations are alarming, and no doubt, they are contributing to a major health crisis in the United States.

For the most part, America’s tap water is heavily contaminated whether it’s well water or from your municipal water system. How do you know if your water is safe for drinking? Have it tested! As an alternative or in addition to having your water tested for toxic chemicals, you can also go to the EWG’s website, put in your zip code, and see what’s in your water.

Thousands of people have been tested for chemical toxins through our coaching programs, and every one of them — that’s 100% — have come back showing at least 3 chemical toxins on their lab results, with the majority having 5 or more chemical toxins. Out of these toxins, most are known to be found in contaminated ground and drinking water. With the increasing evidence showing that most water is now heavily contaminated, getting your household water professionally tested is highly recommended, especially if you or someone in your home is experiencing chronic illness.

For reference, here is a list of the top 12 states with the most toxic water based on population (in order):

1. Texas

2. Florida

3. Pennsylvania

4. New Jersey

5. Georgia

6. Washington

7. Ohio

8. California

9. Arizona

10. Kentucky

11. Wisconsin

12. Maryland

Keep in mind that just because you may not be in one of these states, your water could STILL be highly contaminated. Take for example the water in the mountains of Utah. You might think that mountain water would be clean, but recently we checked the water purity in Park City, Utah and found it to have very high levels of Arsenic, Radium (a radioactive material), and two other toxins that are known to cause disease.

And if metals and chemicals aren’t enough, we have toxic levels of PFAs (from plastics) that have contaminated not only our air and water in the United States, but all over the globe.

60 years ago, chemical manufacturers like 3M and Dupont started using these chemicals, that were originally designed for military use, in everyday household products like nonstick cookware, carpeting, stain-resistant/water-repellent clothing, microwave popcorn bags, dental floss, and many more items people are in contact with every day.

In addition to exposure from consumer products, billions of tons of these toxic chemicals have been dumped into our rivers and landfills, contaminating our air and water. These companies were “self-regulated” rather than having regulation by the EPA with regards to these chemicals. Even though these companies knew about the severe toxic effects from their own internal studies, they never released their findings, and instead covered up their knowledge of the discoveries and continued dumping these toxins in the environment — exposing consumers around the globe to these known toxic chemicals.

These PFAS chemicals have made their way across the globe, contaminating every living organism on the planet. PFOA and PFAS don’t break down in the body or the environment. In fact, scientists haven’t been able to determine the half-life of these chemicals at all (the amount of time it takes for them to break down to half the amount.) Because these chemicals don’t break down, they have accumulated in our bodies, in the bodies of animals, and everywhere in the environment.

Sadly, the United States, which is now the “sickest industrialized nation in the world,” reports that 97 percent of humans have traceable amounts of PFOA in their blood, and it’s known that these toxic chemicals are linked to birth defects, testicular and liver cancer, infertility, metabolic diseases like diabetes, increased blood pressure, increase in body fat, abnormal cholesterol levels, hormone disorders, heart disease, liver cancer, decreased immune function, and many more health concerns.

Apart from PFAS, with so many different toxins in our consumer products, water sources, and air, the first step is taking back responsibility for our own health and healing. We must be our own advocates and become aware of where we are getting exposure, and how these toxins affect our health. You can read my full articles on Water Contamination and PFAS Contamination where I give detailed information on different plastics and how you can determine their toxicity from their labeling.

You may be wondering if you’re safe with the bottled water you’ve been drinking. Unfortunately, not all bottled water is safe to drink either. Millions of dollars are spent by consumers each year on bottled water with the expectation that if it is labeled as pure, spring, or purified that it must be a safe and clean source of water, yet the recent press in August of 2019 revealed that toxic levels of PFAS were discovered in bottles of drinking water in Connecticut. While this incidence was discovered and reported, there is much concern that this is happening much more frequently than we may be aware of.

While PFAS are a serious issue, they are not the only toxins in plastics that you should be aware of. Plastics that are widely used every day also contain other toxins that you may be unaware of. In my article on PFAS Contamination, I listed the identification codes that are shown on all plastic containers denoted by a triangle surrounding a number between 1 and 7, usually found at the bottom of the water bottles or plastic containers. While many use these to identify what plastics can be recycled, these identification codes also reveal much about the toxicity of common toxins found in plastic-based products you might be using.
