State Senate Alert – I NEED YOUR HELP!

When I ran for the State Senate, I promised to fight for more “Transparency” in local and state government.  Illinois has thousands of units of local government.  The people – who pay for all this government – deserve to know where their money is being spent.

This year I have introduced a bill, Senate Bill 37 (SB37), which is a common sense solution.  SB37 will allow people to go “on-line” to local government or school district web sites - and easily review basic information such as: 

• contact information for elected and appointed officials
• notice of regular and special meetings
• annual budget
• ordinances under which the unit of local government or school district operates
• procedures to apply for building permits and zoning variances
• financial reports and audits
• information concerning employee compensation
• taxes and fees imposed by the unit of local government or school district

This legislation is necessary because without it there is little incentive for local government agencies to proactively provide this information to the public.  The internet has made it possible to provide this basic data in an easily accessible format.

I need your help!  YOU will be instrumental in getting this bill passed!  SB37 has now been assigned to the “Local Government” committee in the Senate.  The bill must pass out of committee with a majority vote for it to move onto the Senate floor for a vote. 

If you SUPPORT SB37, please send an email to the NINE Senators on the Local Government committee and ask them to “SUPPORT SB37 – Senator Duffy’s Transparency bill.”
