According to Crain's Chicago Business, government entities are the top five employers in the City of Chicago. The U.S. Government is the number one employer in the City with 49,573 full time employees. The next four top employers are:
- Chicago Public Schools- 40,883 employees
- City of Chicago- 35,237 employees
- State of Illinois- 25,700 employees
- Cook County- 23,083 employees
Combined, these five government entities employee 174,476 people in the City of Chicago, more than the next 15 largest employers combined.
Government in Chicago is muscling out private enterprises by taking money out of the productive sector, through various forms of taxation, and filtering it through multiple layers of bureaucracy. The City of Chicago already has the highest sales tax of all major U.S. cities, and the state just passed the largest tax-hike in state history to pay for government.
