First, you need a Twitter account. Go to http://twitter.com and fill out the form on the right of the page with your name, email, and password to get an account. When you are filling out the forms, let your twitter id be public rather than private. This is important, because when you do tweet your Congressman and Senators, your tweets will be available for the world to see. If people search for your Congressman, they will see how many people are telling them what they want to happen in government. If you want to have a private account for family and friends, then set up a different account for that purpose.

So now I have an account, but what is a “tweet” anyway? Well, it is a small snippet of information that is only 140 characters or less. So, it has to be a short sentence or thought. It seems crazy that people can communicate in such small pieces of information but it really works. It is similar to sending text messages from your phone. However, rather than sending them to one particular person privately, you are allowing the world to see them.

When you jump into Twitter, it is like jumping into a stream or river of information. There is a lot of noise flowing around you and, if you listen hard, you can hear a particular noise or pattern of noise. Just like if you are in the woods by a river, if you listen hard, you might notice there is a deer nearby, drinking from the river.

To “hear” a particular sound on Twitter, people use “hashtags,” which are words with the pound symbol before them. Here are a few examples:

#toct – Top Conservatives on Twitter (which helped launch the Tea Party movement) #sgp – Smart Girl Politics (which helped launch the Tea Party movement)

If you want to send a message to a particular person, like your Congressman or a Senator, you can use the @ symbol, followed by the username (with no spaces between the @ and username) to send a message directly to that person. So if you want to tell Speaker Bohener to stop the out of control spending, you would type @speakerboehner and then the message you want to send.

That is all you have to do to tweet. If you want to go a step further and follow conversations, we are going to show you the simplest tools. Go to: http://search.twitter.com and search for #stopthebleeding and press Search. Now, you can see all the tweets that have used #stopthebleeding. You can reply to people or simply retweet their posts. Replying is like talking to them. Retweet is like saying you like what they said and want others to see it.

To reply, use the @ symbol again or click the Reply button below the tweet you like. A box will come up that you can use to type your reply message in. Type what you want to say and press Tweet. To “retweet” or repeat what someone else has said, you will use the abbreviation RT (for retweet). You can type RT and copy and paste everything that was said or you can simply press the Retweet button below the tweet you like. After clicking that button, you press Retweet.

So, that is how you get started. Let’s make sure everyone knows we want to #Repeal #Obamacare NOW.

If you want more information about how to use Twitter, you can read Jenny Beth Martin’s Twitter for Dummies Part 1 and Twitter for Dummies Part 2.
LTE - CONTACTStag:thegreatawakening.ning.com,2012-02-08:5235400:Topic:284272012-02-08T03:42:04.177Zcarol ann parisihttp://thegreatawakening.ning.com/profile/carolannparis

The public is invited this evening to attend a Meet the Candidates forum that will be held at the Palatine Public Library.

The forum is being held by The Great Awakening’s Palatine chapter, Awaken America, at 6:30 p.m. at the library, 700 North Court.

Attendees will hear from state Rep. Tom Morrison, R-Palatine; state Rep. David Harris, R-Arlington Heights; Cook County Board Commissioner Dan Patlack; and Dr. Arie Friedman, a candidate for the 29th state Senate District. State Sen. Matt Murphy, R-Palatine, also may attend the meet and greet.

“If there are folks that are running, they can reach out to us,” said Carol Parisi, who founded the Palatine chapter in 2009. “People need to know who their representatives are. It’s about better government and getting people who want to serve the people. Now is the time to start getting engaged.”

Awaken America, which has around 200 members, also will be holding a property tax forum later this month with Commissioner Dan Patlack. The forum will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Mt. Prospect Community Center, 50 East Emerson Street.

In FY2011, Illinois faces a $12 BILLION dollar structural budget deficit. More than half of that – $7 BILLION – is related to generous pension and retiree health care programs for government workers that the State simply cannot afford. These generous programs will have racked up more than $140 BILLION in debt and unfunded liabilities by the end of FY2011.

In Illinois, retirement-related debt makes up over 80% of the total liabilities of the state and its pension funds. These liabilities and the state’s budget gap put Illinois in a league of its own. Click here to read the complete Pew Study that ranks Illinois pension system as worst in the nation.

In order to keep the pension funds from running out of money, the State will have to make massive contributions into the funds in future years. By 2020, these contributions will consume around 30% of the state’s “Big Three” tax revenues – from corporate and personal income taxes, and from sales taxes. By 2045, pension payments will eat up close to 50% of these revenues – crowding out dollars for education, public safety, health care for the poor, and other critical social services. Contact your lawmaker NOW and demand Reforms!

Illinois’ fiscal problems and the fact that we have no real plan for dealing with them have made our state one of the least attractive places for doing business. A recent survey of CEO’s placed Illinois at the bottom of the heap in terms of our attractiveness to business; and many of the other states at the bottom have already begun to take steps to address their fiscal problems.

Generous pension benefits that the State cannot afford are at the root of this problem. While the state took a step in the right direction last year by reforming benefits for NEW government workers, CURRENT government workers continue to participate in the State’s traditional and costly plans.

They can retire at age 55 or 60, and receive generous cost-of-living adjustments each year. These lifetime benefits can be worth more than $1 MILLION or more for a full-career employee who retires at 55 or 60. They are completely out-of-line with the benefits offered to taxpayers working in the private sector.

Yet the 95% of Illinois taxpayers who do not receive such generous benefits will pay higher taxes to pay for the 5% of state residents who do.

It is for these reasons and more that AFP-IL encourages you to contact your lawmakers today and demand that they reform the current state employee pension system NOW!
Find your Illinois Lawmakers HEREtag:thegreatawakening.ning.com,2011-05-05:5235400:Topic:113182011-05-05T14:37:52.270Zcarol ann parisihttp://thegreatawakening.ning.com/profile/carolannparis
